Wow, William Steig

This image is from a page of the children’s book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig.

The plot of the book really does not matter. What does matter:

COPS AS PIGS…in a children’s book!

According to Wikipedia, the book has been banned in parts of the country as a result of Steig’s decision to portray the police in this way.

Did he know what he was doing? Was it intentional? Was he unaware of this popularly used expression for the police? Does he have no minority friends?

So many questions.

Also according to wikipedia, Steig's parents were socialists. This doesn't answer any questions for me. He might've been drawn the cops as pigs intentionally or he might've really thought cops were pigs.

Consider this: 1980s Connecticut, young daughter (my cousin) of liberal parents goes to school one day and identifies then-president Ronald Reagan as Bozo the Clown. That's what her father called him, after all.

Additionally… Steig graduated from Townsend Harris at the age of 15. While that doesn't mean he has no minority friends, I would venture to say that his social life was rather limited for a long time.
